Most tea caddies were individually commissioned, and inlay represented an upcharge, so this was an expensive caddy when it was made. These caddies are particularly rare because the population in England in 1790 was about 8 million people. Of those, most lived in poverty. There were few people who had the means to afford an expensive caddy, thus very few were made. It is also remarkable that this object has survived almost 250 years in such fine condition. A beauty to add to any collection of fine antiques.
