Crystal caskets are among the most beautiful and collectible objects in the antique market — opulent, intricately cut, fitted with gilded ormolu mounts that speak to a lost era of luxury craftsmanship. And yet, for all their presence in the market, almost no one selling them can tell you with certainty who made them.

The word you’ll see repeated across 1stDibs, Ruby Lane, and every major resale platform is “attributed.” Attributed to Baccarat. Attributed to a French crystal house. But attribution isn’t the same as documentation — and when I started pulling on that thread, I found it unraveled much further than I ever expected.
